San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore

27 December 2018 by MilanoArte Leave a Comment

We started reveal to our guests the so-called “Sistine Chapel of Milan” when even most of the Milanese did not know about that. Now the church of San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore is everywhere, from Instagram for the joy of influencers, to the covers of travels’ brochures, but still few people know the secret history.

Under the beauty of  San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore’s amazing paintings is hidden a a terrible drama in pure Italian Renaissance style. Plots, betrayals, murders, a thread of blood linking Milano with Bologna await you in this place full of surprises.

The visit is an amazing immersion in the stories of the Old and New Testaments but also a parade of the finest Renaissance fashion, with the sumptuous clothes, hairstyles and jewels represented by the Milanese painter Bernardino Luini.

The church was the patronage of the finest noble families in Milan. That’s why the most important local artists of the 1500s including Bernardino Luini, Callisto Piazza and Simone Peterzano, Caravaggio’s master, worked here.

Do you know that some paintings in the church are directly influenced by the nearby Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci? San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore is the perfect completed to a Renaissance and Leonardo da Vinci’s tour in Milano. Contact us and we will build your tour dedicated to the Milanese Renaissance.
