The Navigli district in Milan is one of the oldest and most lively neighbourhood in town.
In Medieval and Renaissance times the city was crisscrossed by waterways but most of the canals were closed by 1930s, today we can still admire the three largest ones: the Naviglio Grande, the Naviglio Pavese and the Martesana canal.
The first canal dated back to 1100s but Leonardo da Vinci completed the canal system of Milan. He connected the city to Lake Como: an old original lock by Leonardo is still visible near the modern area of Porta Nuova.
Most of today’s canals define the charming district called “Navigli”, one of the most lively area in Milan, full of cafès, bar and the few real trattorias where you get the risotto or the famous milanese ossobuco.
Do you know that one of the greatest masterpieces of Renaissance art is just a stone’s throw away from Navigli? Cappella Portinari inside the Basilica di Sant’Eustorgio will leave you breathless.
